Crete lies at the point where the continents of Europe, Asia and Africa meet. It is the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean with the mildest climate in Europe. The mountains that run across the island act as a barrier to the weather, often creating different conditions in northern and southern Crete.

Some of the most characteristic natural beauties of the Cretan scenery consist of the famous Cretan gorges which begin at the mountainous areas of the island and end to the sea. The most famous and significant gorge of Crete is the infamous gorge of Samaria, which impresses with its size and unique natural beauty, while on its slopes, someone can admire the famous wild goat of Crete which is found nowhere else in Greece. Heraklion is the capital of Crete and one of the Mediterranean region's most fascinating and vibrant cities located in the north coast of Crete. It offers a wealth of museums, a summer-long arts festival, historical sightseeing, amazing nightlife and events throughout the year. Many landmarks tell their story about the city and the island such as the legendary Knossos the centre of the Minoan civilization which lies 5 km south of Heraklion and it is one of the most important archeological sites in Europe.

At the north-west of Crete is located the city of Chania which is one of the most beautiful Venetian ports and among the most traditional cities in Greece. Chania has a great history and cultural heritage, partly because it faced many conquerors through time, thus being open to the influences of different civilizations. Following the way to the east we meet Rethymno city which  has one of the largest sand beaches in Crete (12 km. In spite of the recent enormous tourist growth of the Prefecture of Rethymnon, the local character of its capital, Rethymno, has not changed much.

Crete is also world known due to Elounda a world renowned tourism resort located at golf of Mirambelo in the northern- east part of Crete close to the city of Agios Nikolaos. Elounda has an indented coastline, shaded beaches, crystal clear seas, and a tranquil and heavenly environment. The small fishing village of Plaka (Lasithi), which overlooks the island of Spinalonga the former leper colony and the Kolikithia Peninsula, can be reached a mere 5 km from the main square of Elounda. Elounda is a famous tourist attraction, heavily visited by VIPs for its seaside luxury resorts which accommodate prominent representatives of the world’s social, economic and political life.
